MR BEAN doing James Bond was a fun premise 15 years ago – less so now.

It’s just a shame no one thought to pass that on to those involved in making this laboured, tired and hugely out-of-touch bolt-on of a movie.

Johnny English Strikes Again is very similar to the orginal

In a near-identical plot to the original – swapping John Malkovich as Pascal Sauvage for Jake Lacy as tech genius Jason Volta – we find English trying to expose a bad guy everyone else thinks is a hero.

Along the way are drawn-out gags not so much signposted as tattooed on their a***s, boring car chat and a constant play on “the old ways are best” where technology is concerned.

It is as if the writers have just logged on to the “worldwide web” for the first time, or seen a teenager with an iPhone and reeled in horror that they aren’t playing hopscotch.

Aside from a couple of set-pieces in which Atkinson is allowed to be Mr Bean in a tux, this is misjudged and simply not funny enough.
